How to Prioritise a Product Backlog

A backlog is only useful if it is ordered by value. Prioritise it with method, not gut feel alone.

For the full concept, see Backlog Refinement.

Steps

  1. Ensure items express user value, not just tasks.
  2. Score items by value and effort (or use WSJF, MoSCoW, RICE).
  3. Account for risk and dependencies — some low-value items unblock high-value ones.
  4. Refine top items so they are small, detailed and ready.
  5. Keep the top of the backlog always ready for the next sprint.
  6. Re-order continuously as you learn — priority is never final.
