How to Prioritise a Product Backlog
A backlog is only useful if it is ordered by value. Prioritise it with method, not gut feel alone.
For the full concept, see Backlog Refinement.
Steps
- Ensure items express user value, not just tasks.
- Score items by value and effort (or use WSJF, MoSCoW, RICE).
- Account for risk and dependencies — some low-value items unblock high-value ones.
- Refine top items so they are small, detailed and ready.
- Keep the top of the backlog always ready for the next sprint.
- Re-order continuously as you learn — priority is never final.
